Marlborough


On the Bruce Highway, north of Rockhampton, the road has been rebuilt over the years to take a more coastal route, but the old road still exists and is in good order. It now forms an alternative route between Marlborough and Sarina, Marlborough being some 80 km north of Rockhampton and a mere decayed junction town boasting a truck stop and a camping area. It is quite a pretty area, with the usual escarpment abrupt and blue to the west, and a line of hoop-pine clad bluffs to the north and east.

Once there must have been many more people living there; indeed, if you take the old Sarina road and turn off to the left towards Coocumburra, the winding gravel road will very shortly take you past fields that boast street names, all orderly and correctly placed, only there are no streets... It is clear that local persons with knowledge and interest in the history of the area have taken the trouble to show where the old town was, and how large it was. For that thought we salute you!

The cemetery is accessed via a rusting pipework gate immediately on the left as you take the left fork of the '9-Mile Road'. Take care to shut the gate behind you, then proceed on about 100m to where a small fenced enclosure protects the old cemetery. Presumably this is now private farmland, so should you see any obviously local person thereabouts it is suggested you make your intent and interest known.
