| To find Binjour you start from either Gayndah or Mundubbera, driving from the one township towards the other. About halfway through your journey you will find yourself abruptly climbing an escarpment which is part of the Binjour Plateau. The soil turns a rich red and the vegetation changes, and soon you find yourself in a narrow, hanging valley. Nestled in that valley can be seen the church spire, and if you take the short road down to it the cemetery becomes visible beside it. When I first saw the names on these headstones I recognised them as being Wendish. The Wends and Zerbs were people who lived in the area that nowadays marks the German/Polish border, and while they have lived there for centuries, somehow they never achieved nationhood. Their family names are distinctive blends of what we think of as German and Polish (Slavic), and during the economic and political upheavals of the 1840's many of these people migrated to South Australia where they quietly blended into the similar German stock. Many people did not even realise the cultural differences between the two groups. |

| The people of Binjour appear to have been a different migration, quite a bit later than the exodus to SA. We can be thankful that they enriched the area with their cultural elements and brought their dour honesty to a new state.
