Mike has soldiering in the blood, he tells us, and it may well be true. As a young man he saw military service in a number of fields, and came home with a deep sense of responsibility. He has attempted to illuminate the sharp taste of fear, and the feeling of necessary comradeship in these verses, still bright with the shock of finding a different, dangerous world.
He has developed and polished his writing skills by creating a number of works on his family and their distinctive contribution to NZ history. With doggedness that must be another family trait he has researched the dim family histories and in doing so opened up interesting vistas of Polish and North European history, back as far as the time of the Tartars.
Now he is coming full circle, and is working on an epic verse about these times, and about the threads of his own family that are entwined in colourful history.
It should be noted that this is all original work, reproduced here with permission, and that copywrite rests with Mike Subritzky, the author.
