Waikumete is the largest cemeterey in Auckland. It is located on the old highway between Auckland and Henderson, quite a way to the west of the city itself. It dates from the very earliest years of the city, at the time when cemeteries were no longer controlled by the church, but inside of which were sections defined for the different denominations. Thus there is a large Anglican section, and a smaller Jewish section, with Catholic burials becoming more common as the years went on.
This cemetery is so big that it would take a lifetime to transcribe all the headstones. Nevertheless, many of the families listed in the genealogies on this site are buried there, and so we have opted to list these and link them to those genealogies.
