Waiharara is one of the centers of Croation settlement north of Kaitaia, on the Aupouri Peninsula of the North Island of New Zealand. There are many names on letterboxes ending in 'ich', and a strong cultural influence. These people originally arrived in New Zealand to dig Kauri Gum, but stayed to create farms and establish businesses. They were and still are for the most part devout Catholics, and the layout of the cemetery reflects this - a 'them and us' definition that is repeated in the next cemetery south (Waipapakauri).

Plaque at old Waiharara cemetery site There is an earlier cemetery. It can be found by continuing down the Kaimaumau road about one kilometer and looking to the left. It is currently (2006) signposted alongside the roadside 'children on road' sign. A short walk into the trees reveals the plaque shown on the left. This site was the original township of Waiharara, and at the junction of the Kaimaumau and far north roads. Kaimaumau was a substantial port at the time, with a steamer wharf and a school and pool hall. It provided access to the inner portions of the immense sandspit that the peninsula is really made of.

yet settled into a format agreed between local families. This is quite common with all immigrant groups
who are keen to retain original spellings but battle with a different alphabet. It is assumed that all
of the similar surnames have a common source in spite of their local variations.

As a general rule a name now seen to end in 'ich' most likely started as 'ic', thus the surname
'Pavolovic' becomes 'Pavlovich' in this new world. Other names such as 'Ujdur' (said 'You-der') and
'Basica' and Srhoj (said 'Ser-hoy') hint of different ethnic backgrounds.
