Victoria Valley

When you leave Kaitaia to travel south via the Mangamuka range you will find yourself einding up the Victoria Vally, a picturesque green vale with poplar trees gold in Autumn.
This valley is connected to others that run from Mangonui and from the Whangaroa area, and in the early days was a source of timber. When dairying began in the north it was these green streams that supported the first herds, and there is an early dairy factory hidden away in there. The original Pakeha (white) settlers came from England and brough familiar things such as birds and hedgerows with them. In particular they brought gorse, a prickly shrub with yellow flowers that quickly took over any untilled ground and even today is a curse far greater than it proved in Christchurch, the other place it initially grew, because in the near-tropical climate it morphed to provide two annual seed-sets instead of one...
For all of that, these largely English people who had strick beliefs in their relationship with their god soon changed the land and populated it with their families, kin who are still in the area today.
The cemetery is operated by a Trust, and is about halfway up the valley proper on the left if you are travelling south. Because it is on private property please be respectful of property and indeed of the entire sliver of the past...
