Victoria Valley

If you choose to drive to Kaitaia via the Mangamuka Range, the road will wind over bush-clad hills and down again on the northern side. Abruptly it bursts out of a tiny river valley into a widening zone of green farmlets and regular Lombardy poplars. The cemetery is less than 2 kilometers out, on the right.
It is in fact not a public cemetery, and is run by a trust, but it has a lot of the Far North Pioneers interred there. The surrounding hills and quiet valleys harboured deeply religious families who kept a strict faith that supports them even today. It was these quiet people who contributed so much to the development of what was once steep bush-land.
