Totara Park Cemetery

 
Thames is an historically significant town at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, east and south of Auckland. It was perhaps the second site to see white people after initial settlements in Dusky Sound at the bottom of the South Island, with the arrival of the old Spanish Galleon 'El Plumier' in 1799, and it became an important centre when the new land became to rely on coastal transport.

In addition it proved to have vast forests of Kauri trees as well as gold. Today there is little left of either, but tourists come to see the beautiful indented coast and to fish. There are several cemeteries scattered along the length of the peninsula, but the two most immediate to the township itself are now called Shortland cemetery and Totara Park cemetery.

The cemetery data listed here has come to us mostly by genealogy records and are therefore connected to specific files. The Regional Council must be commended for providing this information on line and covering so many of their cemeteries.
