St Lawrence Headstones, Queensland, Australia

St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence is nowadays little more than a faded signpost some 150 km south of Mackay, on the main Bruce Highway. The sign points eastwards, to the coast and an inlet where in days past many people first found their way ashore, then inland to develop land. Today the rail line winds around the small elevation on which the township stands, with mangroves and muddy flats all around.
The cemetery is tucked away in the trees, a moderately large open space without a hint of grass, but which is nevertheless kempt and unlittered, with a fence and well looked after headstones, most with carefully repainted inscriptions. The single large central wattle tree is home to a swarm of the fiercest mosquitoes I have experienced in Australia to date!
Some images of the place will remain; a recent grave with a battered Akubra (hat) central, and an unopened bottle of beer at the head...
All headstones have been recorded in this instance, with dates right up to the present.
