Kaitaia | |
| Kaitaia is the last substantial town in the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand. It lies at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula, and the 90 Mile Beach. Capes Maria van Diemen, Reinga, and North Cape are all some 80 kilometers north.
Immediately south are the hills of the Mangamuka Ranges, a natural physical and weather barrier that has in no small part shaped the feelings of isolation for those people who chose to live there in days gone by. There were no roads, and all goods were shipped by coastal vessel into harbours on both coasts, with necessities of British colonial life coming in, timber and kauri gum going out.

| The whole area tended to be self-sufficient in a way places closer to the main centers did not, and today this is once again becoming apparent as the central Govenment pares back on all services such as hospitals. To those living there it often appears that they are returning to the days when a Government Minister declared that a fence should be raised from coast to coast, and everything north of it written off. In truth he was referring to the Aupouri Peninsula, which at the time was a wilderness of swamp and sand dunes, but the feeling today is that the fence may have been shifted somewhat farther south... The cemetery inscriptions shown here are far from complete. It would be greatly appreciated if some other person living in the area could assist in expanding this listing, which is only of the St. Saviour's Church.
