Mangapai is a rural settlement just south of Whangarei, in New Zealand's Northland, and it has two cemeteries. Springfield is the second, most southern one and is located on a ridge top with a magnificent view particularly to the east where the monolithic Mount Manaia at the mouth of the Whangarei Harbour is visible, as is much of the harbour itself.

Like Mangapai itself, Springfield was serviced from an arm of the harbour and a series of winding and rough tracks led deeper into the southern hills to serve Mangapai South.

To find the cemetery today you need a different starting point; from Whangarei go to the same Oakleigh junction but do not turn. Instead continue on across the mangrove inlet to the service station on the right. There you will find Springfield Road which eventually gives you Kukunu Road on the left. The cemetery is jut over a kilometre down that road and up on the ridge to the right.

We have now gone to a live on-line database called MOP ('Myra's Other Place') and all the older records listed are being steadily being copied over. In this case we did not have a page for Mangapai before now so you will have to go directly to MOP. The MOP database has a lot more than just cemetery records and is worth checking out here where you can log in as Guest password guest.

To find a person enter the surname in the target box and presss ENTER. This will list every case of that surname across all cemeteries. To list all persons in a particular cemetery enter the name of the cemetery and change the pull-down option immediately to the left from LAST NAME to CEMETERY then ENTER.
