| Immediately adjacent to the cemetery at Rolleston is the airstrip. It is a small strip, intended for light aircraft and presumably, Flying Doctor services. With the township so far from other centers it makes sense to fly in from a remote station. On the day in question the aircraft was from Yeppoon, which is on the coast some 40 km from Rockhampton, and the pilot was willing to give the locals a joy ride, taking those interested for a short flight over the immediate area. It is not recorded exactly what caused the crash, but the plane took off to the south-east and had only just cleared the end of the runway when it suddenly nose-dived down into the ground, killing the pilot and his two passengers. All were buried here in the cemetery less than 100m from where they died... |
