Peria is one of the small pioneering farm valleys in the vicinity of Mangonui, in the Far north of New Zealand's North Island. There is a cluster of similar villages in the area, now a green winding haven, cool with meandering streams, lillies and peach trees in the fields, and hemmed in by forested hill country.
At one time the area boasted schools, shops, a dairy factory, and a thriving timber industry. Nearly all but the schools are now gone, but the charm remains. It is also a stronghold of fiercly Calvanistic Bretheren, who have practised their beliefs in these quiet valleys for many generations. It must be said that these families produced some of the country's fairest, most scrupulous citizens.The cemetery is hard to miss, a tidy slice of green alongside the road.
