| Monal was a goldmining area near Monto, in Central Queensland, now largely forgotten. In this it shares a lot with Copperfield, near Clermont, for interested parties have carefully recorded known names on a plaque. It is these names that are the basis for this listing; it would be helpful and interesting if anyone can provide additional details or material.

| There is sparse information on the Clewley family. From what we can see the parents were Arthur and Matilda (Fulloon) and they spent time in goldfields as far away as Mt. Morgan and Chillagoe. It seems likely Monal was the later experience, for there is a geographical feature names 'Clewley's Gap' which lies to the North-East of Monal. This is a kind of pass through the escarpment and gives access to the relative highlands and in particular Biloela. In Biloela cemetery we find 'Matilda Clewley', of an age to be the mother of the above children, plus more children (by then adults) in the same cemetery. From these circumstances we theorise that these were members of the same family, and that they finally settled in Biloela. If anybody out there has any relevant information that can confirm or deny the tentative genealogy we have on our records, we'd like to hear from you. |
