Maryborough along with Bundaberg is one of the more important pioneer towns in Queensland, mainly because immigrant ships sailed directly to the mouth of the Mary River and discharged thousands of european settlers. Later gold was found in the region and Maryborough's importance grew as it supported the inland goldfields. Later years has seen it as the first gem in a chain of horticultural centers strung along the Burnett River that extends well into the hinterland.

Today it lies on the main coastal highway north from Brisbane and has a new life as a thriving modern business centre. The main cemetery is right beside the highway as one travels from South to North, just over the river. Look for the Transport Department service building and turn off to park nearby. It is very well kept, green with what must be nearly daily watering and regular mowing; but is a massive area that this website will probably never detail in any completeness.
