Kawakawa

 
Kawakawa is a small town in the Bay of Islands (BOI) of New Zealand's Northland. For many years it was noted as the only town with a railway line running through the main street but time has reduced this to a mere tourist feature, for the line goes to the port of Opua a few kilometers away.

It is also noted as being the northernmost town with a meat processing facility (known in NZ as the 'Freezing Works') nearby, although the adjacent township of Moerewa might prefer to claim that fame. In other ways it is a little unremarkable except for the friendliness of its people and their endurance in having placed their town in a low valley that floods regularly and cuts the main highway north. I well remember this fact from my childhood as the bridges over the two streams causing this flooding were traversed via two hump-back bridges that gave the impression of brief weightlessness at speed...
