To get to Irvinebank one has to travel to Atherton. Then over the range to Herberton. Then over the next range to Irvinebank, and by the time you manage to wind over the rough gravel road you certainly begin to appreciate the tenacity and dedication of the pioneers who transported everything they needed over the same route. The country becomes increasingly arid, although the gum trees tenaciously cling to every ridge.

When you do arrive, it is to find a series of old buildings huddled together in tightly grouped and steep gullies. Even today it is less than easy to turn the car around to drive back out. Where the old people got their water from must be a story in itself, for today there is a small dam and modern filtration facilities - necessary when you read the warning signs about how the water is unfit to drink directly.

The town existed solely for tin. Tin was initially dug out of the steep river beds, then later the Vulcan Mine opened and became the monopolistic operator of the town. It was therefore a Company Town, but as far as can be determined, it was a company willing to support the community, if in a somewhat autocratic way.

To find the cemetery you must drive through the town past the dam, and along a narrow track that eventually turns abruptly into a side gully, and you are surprised by the sudden appearance of headstones seemingly carefully standing tiptoe-style on the narrow piece of dig-able ground...
