Broadwood is tucked into the hills on the northern shore of the Hokianga Harbour, in Northland. Like many of the small towns in the area it was initially established as pioneers on government grants as received rewards for service in the various areas where Maori wars took place, and the first settlers entered the area from the convenience of the harbour, following timber workers.

Nowadays there is a sealed road running from Mangamuka township west and past the Kohukohu ferry turnoff to wind around the foothills and eventually arrive at access points for Herekino and Whangape harbours before continuing on to the Ahipara-Kaitaia road.

The listing shown here excludes the war graves that lie just a little lower down the hill.
