In fact this is not the original cemetery; the entire original township has now been dug up, and all that can be seen nowadays are rolling dumps of overburden. At the time of the establishing of this open cut mine the cemetery was transferred to the current location. Presumably some of the unmarked graves would have since gone through a gigantic earthmoving bucket...
The entire area is of interest. Clermont was originally a town based on gold mining, and it and the adjacent smelter town of Copperfield were proclaimed in 1864. Copperfield smelted ore from the hills west of Clermont, while the gold was mined nearer to the town of Clermont and eastwards to the town of Miclere, now long gone (along with its cemetery).
Gold is still mined in a line north of Clermont along what is now the Charters Towers road. Down that road, but on a private property, we are informed, is the old cemetery of 'Black Ridge'.
