Anakie cemetery; Archive

Anakie is part of a region called 'The Gemfields' which stretches some 800 km as far north as Bowen. It hosts three townships; Anakie, Sapphire and Rubyvale and is cocerned with the mining of several types of gemstones, particularly sapphires. These were created in volcanoes in the ancient past and as those volcanic structures weathered the gems were washed into local watercourses and distributed downstream. Nowadays fossickers know to look for the bands of river gravel hidden close under the sandy soil, then to subject their gravel to some kind of mechanical action to seperate the higher density gem material from the trash.

Nowadays tourists can go and pay to spend hours in workshop places, paying per bucket of pre-dug gravel and doing the rest of the job comfortably under shade with toilets and coffees and kid's playgrounds close to hand. This is a far cry from the wild-west style of digging done at the beginning where people went out on their own and didn't come back. Some of them were found and subsequently buried in places that became today's cemeteries.

The Anakie cemetery is right in town; turn off the Capricorn Highway and drive into the cluster of houses that make up the settlement. The cemetery os close by the road.

This page was constructed after the on-line database was created and there was little point in duplicating material which is changing daily in any case. Click on the MOP link and log in. Choose HEADSTONES then fill in the target box with the surname of interest OR enter any cemetery name to show a list of ALL the records for that cemetery. Once in a given record the headstone picture or pictures can be downloaded.

Note the small selector arrowheads (the tiny black triangles) that allow different search modes. Changing the SEARCH one to 'LIKE' for instance means that you can specify parts of a target e.g. 'Brown' will include 'BROWNE' etc.

The old website had material formatted and presented on the actual pages, which proved to be a tedious exercise. All new entries go directly into MOP but the old material still exists and in many cases has not yet been transferred. Accordingly those records are shown below; if there's a big green tick it means the entry has indeed been transferred.
