Roy and Joan Wagener
Roy and Joan WagenerRoy is a farmer, horticulturalist and author. He and Joan live near the Houhora Harbour some 45 km north of Kaitaia on the road to Cape Reinga, and are members of the locally extensive WAGENER family.

Joan Wagener (née Ferguson) was born at Ellerslie, in Auckland, and bought up in Riverhead (on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour upper reaches) and in Te Awamutu, south of Hamilton. When first married the couple went to live and work in Nelson, in the northern part of the South Island where they picked tobacco in the season, and worked on a sheep station out of season. Later Roy returned the family back to the very far north of New Zealand and helped create a dairy farm from what was mere swampland. Later the property was expanded and converted to beef. They had two children, Alan and David (deceased). Contact by fax ++649 4098 726

David Wagener
David WagenerDavid Wagener was the second son of Roy and Joan Wagener. He was born in Kaitaia and brought up in Houhora, as were most of his generation.
After leaving school he trained as a diesel mechanic with Caterpillar, and later went overseas to England and Canada, working in this trade. When he returned to the far north he established a contracting business and was engaged in this when diagnosed with a brain tumour.
He is buried at Houhora cemetery, and his three girls are now in their teens and moving out into the world.

Alice Evans (née Wagener)
Picture of Alice Evans comingWriter and historian. Originally trained as a teacher, and had the dubious experience at one time of teaching her much younger brother Roy. Much of her early life is detailed in her most recent book 'Teatree Berry Kid', wherein she tells of the difficulties of teaching in quite remote settlements of New Zealand at the time when transport was by steamer and horseback. Alice has always taken a keen interest in family history, and is considered the ultimate reference by other family members. She is largely responsible for the information in the genealogy section. She lives in the township of Kaitaia, in the North Island of NZ.

Alice has a son Peter and daughter Judith, who has been the other prime mover in family history.

Petra Wagener
Picture of a blonde PetraPetra is the daughter of Alan Wagener and Christine Moffatt. She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and brought up there. After some year of travelling in Europe she returned down-under and now lives in Melbourne, Australia, not far from her mother and brother, who had likewise shifted from New Zealand.

Merv & Maggie Read
Merv and Maggie are world-famous in the Far North. Merv is the original practical joker, who thinks nothing of encouraging local drivers with spurious warnings of speed cameras.

Merv is also remembered for his efforts with an impromptu bazooka consisting of a length of drainpipe, a suitably sized potato, and an aerosol can, and a match...
