| In addition, Florence Keene notes in her 'To the Northward' that Nicholas Maria came to New Zealand in the 'Eliza' in 1866, and was farming for some time in Mangonui before being attracted first to the Thames and then to the Californian goldfields. Returning to New Zealand, he bought 214 acres of good farming land in Oruru Valley, and married Emily, a daughter of Joseph Evans, then of Awanui. As a result of an accident in 1892 Nicholas had a leg amputated and some time afterwards retired to Mangonui. |
