| 'Petersen' and 'Peterson' are effectively the same name, the 'sen' being the Scandinavian version of 'son'. Note that one time in the recent past it was a Scandinavian custom to assign a surname according to the father's name rather than the actual surname. Thus Jens Smit may have had a son Johan, who then became 'Johan Jensen', not the expected 'Johan Smit'. Genealogists beware!!! |
