| John and Ann Bain emigrated to Australia twice. On the first occasion (1853) they travelled to Melbourne on the iron clipper 'Hurricane', a ship made famous on her final voyage to that port in 1859, when she ran aground and sank. They spent some time in the goldfields of Bendigo and Castlemaine, before returning to Scotland. It appears they gained one child, and lost another, as it is recorded that Margaret 'died in infancy', and the dates suggest it was William Hunter Bain who was born in Victoria shortly after their arrival. Their second emigration was to Queensland, on the 'Queensland'. On arrival in Sydney the ship had to go into dry dock, so the remaining passengers went on to Brisbane in the 'Prince of Wales', arriving on 16 May 1862. With the Bain family was the Laidlaw family , who were related by the fact that the two women (Ann and Jessie) were sisters. The Laidlaws largely remained in Brisbane, while the Bains moved north, first to Gladstone, then to Rockhampton, then eventually on to Herberton, on the western slopes of the Tableland. |
