There are millions of termite mounds on Cape York. As you will see in other pictures, they can be as high as 5 meters, and come in a variety of shapes and colours. After a burn-off they are suddenly very visible. They are made of mud and termite saliva, and are very solid! The termites gather vegetable matter such as rotting timber, and carry it back to the mound where they utilise it to grow fungus, farming it, so to speak. These same termites can make a meal of a modern house built in the tropics, and special precautions are vital if your house is to remain standing. For this reason, the only historical buildings to be seen are made of stone and cement. Use your BACK button to return to previous screen and frames
