John (Peter) McIntosh was born in Hokitika on the West Coast of a goldmining father and orphaned at 4 years. He was later taken to an Auckland orphanage, and somehow became assistant to Louis Subritzky in his Houhora store. While with the Subritzkys he learned about boats and shipping and operated some of the Subritzky boats on the coast. At one time he was a whaler based out of what is now known as Whale Island, one of the small islands off Cape Karikari (across the bay from Houhora), for the whales were known to migrate close into shore at that point. Houhora and Cape Karikari are on the east coast quite near the tip of New Zealand's North Island. Peter McIntosh is famous for his race seawards in his whaler 'Tainui' to intercept the steamer 'Zealandia' after the sinking of the 'Elingamite' at the Three Kings Islands, just north of New Zealand.
